IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship 2026
About
The International Mathematical Union (IMU) Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program provides grants for excellent mathematics students from developing countries pursuing doctoral degrees. The program is designed to support talented students who plan to complete their PhD in a developing country, including their home country, and are committed to careers in mathematical research and teaching. Professional mathematicians nominate candidates for this competitive fellowship program.
Who Can Apply
Students cannot apply directly and must be nominated by a university professor in mathematics with a PhD who is currently supervising Master's or PhD students. Student nominees must be citizens and residents of developing countries as defined by the IMU, have been accepted or pre-accepted into a recognized doctoral program in a developing country, demonstrate an outstanding academic track record in mathematical sciences, have a thesis advisor and research project already identified, and aspire to a career in mathematical teaching and research. Students in joint graduate programs involving institutions in non-developing countries are not eligible.
What You Get
The fellowship provides up to $10,000 per year that can be used to cover tuition fees, travel expenses to the institution of study, housing, and basic living expenses. Recipients also gain recognition from the international mathematics community and support for pursuing advanced research in their home countries.
