About

Internews' Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is offering the Biodiversity Media Grants to support media organizations that want to strengthen their reporting on biodiversity issues. The program is part of EJN's Biodiversity Media Initiative, which aims to increase understanding of threats to biodiversity and the solutions needed to address these challenges. The grants are designed to improve both the quality and quantity of biodiversity stories while building the capacity of journalists to cover these critical environmental issues.

Who Can Apply

Media organizations in countries classified as low- or middle-income by the World Bank can apply. This includes journalist networks, media organizations, civil society organizations, and academic institutions. EJN is especially interested in supporting projects in biodiversity-rich regions or countries facing unprecedented biodiversity loss. While they will consider applications from NGOs or environmental groups looking to build journalist capacity, preference goes to applications from or affiliated with professional journalists, media organizations, and journalism schools. Applications must be submitted in English, and applicants need a working understanding of English or access to translation support. Organizations that received EJN grants in 2025 are not eligible, though other existing or former grantees can apply. Advocacy or political campaigning projects will not be considered.

What You Get

Selected organizations receive grants worth 10,000-12,000 EUR each. EJN anticipates supporting three to four organizations total. Proposals with smaller budgets will be more competitive, though larger amounts may be considered for innovative, resource-intensive projects. Beyond funding, selected organizations also receive support from experienced mentors throughout their project implementation.

How to Apply

Applications are evaluated based on proposal quality, relevance to program objectives, potential impact and project design effectiveness, innovative characteristics, financial viability and cost-effectiveness, the applicant's ability to execute the project, and geographical distribution of grantees. Applicants must be transparent about any use of generative AI tools in their proposals, and EJN reserves the right to disqualify those who submit AI-generated content as their own work.
